Municipality description

Maroggia, a lovely village on the shores of Lake Lugano and not too far from Lugano, was probably already inhabited in the Iron Age; a Northern Etruscan inscription was found in the area in 1906 and a stele from the Roman period in 1926. The inhabitants of Maroggia, whose small, compact historical center developed behind the parish church, initially lived from fishing and charcoal production. Later, thanks to the abundant and regular flow of water from the Mara stream, milling became the main activity and numerous mills were built (as well as a paper mill and a food factory that was active until the mid-19th century): a traditional activity that is still carried on today, centuries later, using modern techniques. Maroggia, like many other villages in the region, was home to great artists: the Rodari, Longhena and Somaini. The development of Maroggia focused mainly on the south of the small historic center, leaving the structure and the close connection to the lake unchanged. Maroggia, together with Melano and Rovio, is part of the municipality of Val Mara since 2022; it has 664 inhabitants and lies 277 m above sea level.
