Chiasso, Pedrinate and Seseglio are at the southern tip of Switzerland. The customs town borders the Italian region of Lombardy and is an important starting point for discovering the variety of experiences in Mendrisiotto. The park of the Breggia Gorges, the Muggio Valley and Monte Generoso are close by. Chiasso is a city of encounters and an important center for trade and communications. A plethora of events take place along the Corso San Gottardo, which attract numerous visitors every year. Among the events are the Jazz Festival and the Carnival Nebiopoli - a masked parade with festivities. A theater, museums and art galleries round out the cultural offerings. A theme trail on the Penz Hill near Chiasso refers to the theory and practice of viticulture. Before becoming the important centre of transport and commerce that it is today, a development that started in 1873 when the train station was designated a point of entry for the Swiss National Railways, Chiasso was a modest rural village. The oldest documents relating to the existence of a rural habitat, or more precisely some groups of -cassine- (a sort of habitable cow-shed) date back to 1127, when Chiasso was little more than a «suburb» of Como. It did not become an autonomous commune until 1416. Located in an open valley and flanked by hills on both sides, Chiasso has always been a transit point for travellers. Today it owes its importance to being a customs post, which has also promoted it to the ranks of commercial and financial centres of some importance. Roman altars have been discovered in Pedrinate. Here you still find some cultivated areas, primarily vineyards.
Located in the southernmost corner of Switzerland, the Mendrisiotto Region with its Toscana-like landscape extends up to the Italian border. The region south of Lake Lugano is defined by multifaceted nature parks, picturesque villages and - by way of contrast - the cosmopolitan city of Chiasso. Mendrisiotto has become an important transit area thanks to the development of the transport infrastructure and the proximity to important urban centers in northern Italy. Away from the highway you will however find a lush nature paradise - a verdant green hilly landscape - which is partially a wine-growing region, but is also blessed with vast nature parks and imposing gorges. Picturesque villages dot the rural countryside and form a contrast to the border city of Chiasso. The far-flung hilly terrain is well-suited for bicycling and hiking tours and you can take a rest at one of the many typical Ticinese grotto restaurants. From Monte San Giorgio (1’097 meters), listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, you will enjoy a sweeping view of Lake Lugano and the Alps. On the Nature Trail, geological and paleontological peculiarities (in the earth’s geological past, a subtropical sea with a rich fauna existed here), as well as the flora and fauna of the mountain, are described. The best view is obtained on Monte Generoso (1’704 meters), the highest mountain around Lake Lugano. A 40-minute ride with the cogwheel train takes you to the peak. The mountain offers a plethora of leisure activities, among them a nature trail and a planet trail. In the Geo-Park of the Breggia Gorge in the Muggio Valley one can admire a rich spectrum of natural biospheres on an area of about 65 hectares and a length of 1.5 kilometers: rapids, waterfalls, diverse stone formations and a myriad of animal and plant species. In the lively cities of Chiasso and Mendrisio you will find numerous events and sights: churches, palaces and museums, but also music festivals and folk festivals such as the vintner festivals and chestnut celebrations. One of Switzerland’s few factory outlets stands in Mendrisio’s Fox-Town. In this vast shopping center many international high-end brands offer their products at factory prices.
